So I never thought I’d ever be posting a real entry on a blog. But I am, for the first time today.
It was spurred by, perhaps, many things that have happened this week.
Firstly this evening, I went to hear the creator of PostSecret, Frank Warren, speak about how he started PostSecret, some of the “secret” secrets (ones that he were unable to publish), and his secret. All of his story was quite interesting and he does a lot of good charity work. For example, he was selling the books today at 20-30% discounts and was giving all the proceeds to a local Athens non-profit organization dedicated to depression and suicide awareness. Lately, he has been posting email responses to his postings of secrets on his website, kind of tying people together in a global community of sorts. But there was one thing he said that really brought me to thinking, and the gist of it is this:
“The experience in our lives, whether it be suffering, etc., if we can find a way to face them, it might bring a new, deeper and higher meaning to our lives.”
Being that the Virginia Tech shootings occurred just yesterday, it seemed fitting that what he said brings new light to this event. I am still shocked at how a lone person is able to slaughter so many people in a single day. I am still not sure what I’m trying to say, but hopefully we will be able to overcome and bond together as a large community to lessen the pain and perhaps the violence in the future.
